What is something that you want to see God do in your life that He has has never done before? That’s a question I often ask myself time and time again. Each time I ask myself that question though, I’m always tempted to think “why would God do this for me?” Have you ever been in this place? You either want or need God to something new in your life but you can’t quite see how it’ll happen?
There is a guy named Naaman in the scriptures who needed God to do something that had never been done before. To start let’s take in the book of 2 Kings at who Naaman was and what he did.
Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy. (2 Kings 5:1)
We see that Naaman was highly regarded and that he was a commander for an army called Aram which is modern day Syria. Even though Naaman had all of this authority and was highly respected we see that he had leprosy.
Naaman goes to see a prophet named Elisha hoping that God would heal him of his leprosy. Naaman travels to this prophet and what he encounters is something that he didn’t expect would happen.
“Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.” But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.” (2 Kings 5:10-11)
Naaman is unhappy with what he is told and he goes away angry because he was expecting God to cure him of his leprosy through Elisha but God wanted to cure him another way.
This is the same thing for us as well. We want God to do something about our circumstances whether it’s a relationship, physical or a personal struggle.
“Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.” (2 Kings 5:13-14)
Naaman went down into the water and was healed. He may not have been healed the way that he wanted to be healed but he was healed. Naaman thought it wasn’t going to happen after he got angry but God did something that had never been done and healed Naaman.
God can and wants to do the same thing in our lives! What if God wants to do something so big in your live but He’s asking you to have even a mustard seed sized faith. Naaman was told to get in the water seven times, but for you it may be that mustard seed sized faith. Will you trust God at His word? Will you believe Him for the impossible?
Reflect:
- What thoughts do you have about God doing something in your life that’s never been done before?
- What is something that you want God to do that has never been done before?
- Are you open enough to allow God to move in your life how He wants?
- Have you been faithful in believing God can do it?
- Faith moves God, do you have even a mustard seed sized faith?
