The Most Holy Place

In the book Ezekiel of the Old Testament, we find that God gives instructions on how to build what’s called the Temple. This Temple is important because it’s where God was worshipped by his people.

There were different parts of the temple that had different meanings and significances. There was a place where the people of God would enter, confess their sins, and even a little further in there was a place to sacrifice burnt offerings to God.

But there was a place deep in the Temple that was sacred. It was called the “Sanctuary.”

The sanctuary was where the priests would go in and meet with God. The tradition was to do this only once a year. I love how Ezekiel describes the sanctuary, the most sacred place of the temple like this:

‘He said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.”‘ (Ezekiel 41:4b)

The sanctuary where the priests got alone with God and prayed to him and waited for him was called most holy.

This is so powerful and cool because it means that the most important thing that would happen was for the priests to meet with God. That time they got alone with God was their “most holy place”.

Our most holy place

Just like the priests got alone with God and made it a priority to get in their most holy place, it’s the same for us.

For us to have peace, assurance that God is with us, joy, hope, and guidance we need to be in our most holy place every single day – the time where we meet with God.

You don’t have to be a priest or even a pastor or anything like that to meet alone with God. You are a child of God who has access to your Father, the Father.

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, ⁵ to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. ⁶ Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” ⁷ So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. (Galatians 4:4-7 NIV)

We are God’s children and we have access to him. We are free to meet with him whenever we want. When you go to him it’s not as if you are a stranger begging for something, you are a child. God knows you, he sees you and he loves you. Meeting with God is a time to get filled, a time to feel loved, a time to remember, a time to ask, and a time to be the real us.

Anyone, anywhere at anytime can meet with God.

I love how the book of Psalms describes how eventually the more we meet with God we’ll be asking ourselves this question:

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? (Psalm 42:2 NIV)

Your most holy place is your quiet times with Jesus.

We need connection with God desperately. I read this quote in a book recently called “More Than A Healer” and it said this:

“Imagine having to walk around every day thinking, “I am the source of power for my life. I have to fix my problems. I have to be strong. I have to be god, since there isn’t one.”

We need to know God in order to have hope from him. The best way to get to know him is by spending time with him.

Everyone’s quiet times can look different but the point is to have one. I have friends that connect with God most through the outdoors. I also know of people who connect with God the most through music. The method is not as important as the repetition.
