One of my favorite letters in the New Testament is 1st Corinthians which can be classified as an occasional letter meaning it was written to address specific issues within the church in the city of Corinth. When the Apostle Paul wrote this he was trying to lead the people of the church there in the right direction because they had gone off course in many different ways.
Back in the 1st century of Roman/Greek culture when this letter was written the people of Corinth were very boastful about themselves trying to see who was the wealthiest and who had more power. That was just one of many ways they were off course, more were they became arrogant and engaging in sin as well as having the mindset that God could only use rich and powerful people to make a difference. This is what Paul writes to them in response to their behavior in the church:
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things-and the things that are not-to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. (1 Corinthians 1:27-29)
It makes sense that Paul would want them to know this considering their culture and the direction they were going. In the world today we can think just like the Corinthians did… “I can’t be used by God, I don’t have a doctorate in ministry” and “I’m just an employee at a retail store, how could God use me?”
The awesome news is, you don’t have to be strong, powerful, wealthy or well educated to be used by God. Paul made that very clear. He is saying it’s the people that often get overlooked that God can still use. If you’re rich and powerful you can still be used by God but not if you are boastful and arrogant which is what Paul was trying to get the Corinthians to see.
I have some news for you today, if you feel weak today, you might be getting ready to be used by God! If you feel shameful today, that’s ok! God is still going to use you to make a difference! If you feel overlooked, God hasn’t overlooked you! He sees you and has great plans for you! If you feel like your life is a mess, that’s ok! The mess is potential for God to do something good. If you feel like you don’t have all the answers, that’s ok too!
God loves you and has great plans for you. He’s not done with you. You can be used by Him. You are blessed and not cursed. You have favor because you are a child of God. It’s not your position in the world that determines if God will use you. God certainly does use people with high positions of honor and wealthy people for sure, but more than anything He loves to use someone who’s humble with a good attitude. Someone who’s constantly looked over but not arrogant. Someone who may not have the money, position or title but they are available.
I want you to say this a couple of times right now: “I am a loved child of God who will be used to make a big difference. I will not count myself out.”
You are loved, valued, gifted, favored, adored and talented! Don’t ever forget that.
- Have you counted yourself out from being used by God?
- How do you view yourself?
- Are you boastful and arrogant in any way?
